But a little closer, it's clear that Jamey was joking.

"I got in the club and had a bit of a conversation with some friends," says Oelte. "They started complaining about all the stuff I was buying and he said 'That's okay, I'll help you out.'"

He's a cool guy. He might as well be. His Instagram photo, with his drink bill, appears to belong to Oelte.

But why did a guy take three bucks from the bar and two drinks from the ATM at the same time?

The Daily Mail reports that when police took the wallet and the beer card from Oelte's handbag, they discovered that there was a $100,000 worth of cash in the card, $70,000 of it in Oelte's wallet.

"It was a shocking amount of money," wrote Oelte. "It's a pretty huge amount for a friend of mine."

It's not the first time a $30,000 gift card has been lost in a crime.

In July 2015, a Chicago man, Justin Hagerty, was arrested for leaving a $10,000 gift card with a check for $70,000 that he'd received while on the job with the Illinois Department of Transportation.

On August 10, 2016, two men wearing jackets and baseball caps walked into a gas station and handed the two $10,000 cashier's checks to a cashier. The checks were never returned.

In May 2015, a $100,000 gift card was stolen from a North Carolina gas station.

In June 2011, a South Florida man sent a friend $75,000 for "a single order" on a card that would never appear in the form.

Hugh Cagle, the new district manager for the St. Louis area, said the district's main concern is that the residential communities won't be able to accommodate "the influx" of new residents, especially since the average monthly household income for the first wave of construction projects was just over $72,000 in October, according to the Census Bureau.

"So we're definitely concerned about the ability of those existing communities to support growth and the ability of new developments to create jobs," Cagle said. "It's really our first priority — what are we going to do to support all these new subdivisions moving forward and how do we get them on the road?"

Growth in the suburbs hasn't slowed anytime soon

The suburban growth in the past eight years has continued apace — according to the Census Bureau, a lot of it's due to rapid population growth. But it has also slowed down due to slower rates of home sales and new construction.

It's hard to get an accurate estimate of what the impact of all those developments will be, since the city does not keep track of property sales.

A year ago, there were roughly 6,000 homes and condos on the market in all of the suburbs, according to real estate firm Trulia. By July that number had dropped to about 4,600 homes and condos.
